Halloween Rocks
Thursday, November 01, 2007Many people love Christmas, Hanukkah, Independence Day, or even Thanksgiving. For me, Halloween is the best holiday. We get to be someone else for an evening, deal with the darker side of ourselves that we don't always like to face, and eat a hell of a lot of candy. All Hallows Eve (and the day before) also gave me a great surprise this year. I got clarity with my artistic direction. It's actually so simple that I can't believe I didn't think of it before. That's what happens when you over think things.
Great art doesn't necessarily come from complex ideas, aesthetic theory or epic struggles. It comes from living. Experiencing the world and being conscious of your reaction to it. Staying in the ivory tower of the art world leaves me stale, work that no one but other people in the art world can relate to. What's the point if I'm only communicating to a small network of people? This doesn't mean that I'll be creating representational work or dumbing down my paintings, but just painting the simple joys and struggles of life.
Here's another line painting and, yes, a representational painting. The representational piece was about my frustration with trying to find what I wanted to say with my art. It still needs a lot of work.
